National Park Service: The American Presidents
By: Fly Away Cafe    1 days 5 hours 32 minutes ago
Channel: Travel Living

With the Presidential inauguration just a couple weeks away, its a good time to think about our former Presidents and the place they occupy in history.  Putting politics aside, thats just what the National Park Service has done put Presidential PLACES on display with the new Discover Our Shared Heritage on-line travel itinerary site.

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello The American Presidents itinerary explores the lives, contributions and historical sites of all 43 presidents.  (President-elect Obama is not yet on the list.)  Among the sites listed are birthplaces, home and memorials.  Theres also a general presidential itinerary that includes the White House, Mount Rushmore, and other general sites.

The list includes over 70 sites spanning the country, all listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and about half part of the National Park System.

Heres a sampling of what youll find:

  • Description and significance of the site
  • Information and maps on how to visit
  • Photographs, old and new
  • Accompany links to essays by presidential historians
  • A Learn More section that will steer you to a bibliography and additional travel sites to help you plan a visit to any of the historic locations

I checked out a few places that have been on my to-visit list for awhile now, as well as added a few:  Thomas Jeffersons Monticello (in photo above), Adams National Historic Park, Eisenhower National Historic Site, and the First Ladies National Historic Site.

How about you?  Any place on the list inspire you to visit?

The matches are from a restaurant and bar by the name of Monroes, and theyve capitalized on the image of the blond bombshell in various renditions of matchbooks.

Neil sent a few other displays of matches that Ill be sharing in the coming weeks.  Thanks, Neil.  Always glad to hear from a collector.

Join Me on a Blind Date with the World
By: Fly Away Cafe    3 days 17 hours 12 minutes ago
Channel: Travel Living

Are you an adventurous traveler?  Do you like having new experiences wherever you travel, yet have grown accustomed to the creature comforts of a nice bed and place to sleep?  Do you have a sense of competitiveness belying that ever-so-cool traveler facade?

Globe of the world If so, the Global Scavenger Hunt ‘09 could be just the travel adventure that youre looking for!

The scavenger hunt, or A Blind Date with the World as it’s also called, is a real round-the-world travel adventure and competition.  This is not a scripted television event, its about real people and real experiences.

The Global Scavenger Hunt is all about allowing real travelers to compete in a real travel adventure competition, for all the right reasons–the love of travel, trusting strangers in strange lands and giving something back to the planet.

Heres how it works:

The 2-person teams will be given a list of things to find, do, or experience.  Youll have to solve riddles, follow clues, answer trivia questions.  Its just like the scavenger hunts that you may have had as a kid.  Only in this version youll be in exotic destinations immersing yourself in local culture.  Its the ultimate travel game and the world is your game board.

But its not really a race its a rally, too.  Some contests will be based on racing and speed, while others will be rally based.  The rally part of the adventure will be like a to-do list of experiences, with points award for each that you accomplish.  Teams will have to devise a strategy to go for the big point experiences or multiple lower point ones.

In other words, its just like real travel.  Youll never be able to do everything on your list, so you have to devise a strategy as to what you can to based on your time available.

The race/rally combination of adventurers means that you wont miss the world as you race through.  Youll also have time to appreciate the places youre visiting.  There is also free time and downtime worked into the schedule.

The one thing that grabbed me about this competition is that it is a First Class experience.  Youll stay in First Class accommodations, eat delicious meals, and attend great events.  Youll need a daypack, but you can leave your bulky backpack at home and just bring your roller bag.

Of course, luxury doesnt come cheap.  In this case it comes with a $9.900 price tag, which includes all international airfare to and from the beginning and ending cities, First Class hotels, some special events and group banquets, some ground transportation, and some goody bags.  Additionally, youll also want to plan for some day-to-day expenses, both for scavenger and personal purchases.  $125 per day per team is probably a good budget.

Id love to do this trip, but with the January 17th application deadline looming, and without a spare 10k laying around, its not in the cards for this year.  (Unless I can find sponsors or figure out a way to raise that kind of cash in two weeks.)

But — as soon as this years event is over, Im going to go looking for a partner and start raising some money because in 2010 I want to go on a Blind Date with the World

Anyone want to join me?  Come on, I know there are some great travelers out there and we could put together a dynamite team.  Whos willing to step up and say "Yeah, lets do it!

Note:  The Global Scavenger Hunt is more than just a competition.  Its also about raising a million dollars for its charitable foundation and the many organizations that it helps to fund (including Kiva, Free the Children, Doctors without Borders, and CARE).

Keep Travel Alive All Year Long with a Travel Calendar
By: Fly Away Cafe    4 days 4 hours 5 minutes ago
Channel: Travel Living

If youre still trying to figure out how youre going to add a little travel into your life and budget this year, heres a low budget way to get you travel fix at home.

Buy a wall calendar of the destination you want to visit this year.

You can use the beautiful photos as a daily reminder to cut back on your lattes, and save up for an espresso in Tuscany.  Or to ditch the muffin from the cart to save up for a croissant in Paris.  Take the bus so you can finance a gondola ride in Venice, or forego the latest fashion so you can lounge in your bikini in the Caribbean.

No matter what your travel plans or destination this year, there will be a calendar to inspire your every travel longing.

Here are some ideas to get you thinking:

Italy calendar Ireland calendar Africa calendar Castles calendar

Ive got Italy on my wall this year.  Both as a reminder of last years visit, and as a way to keep me excited for a return visit this year.

Whats hanging out your wall this year?
