Lake Tahoe
Dense evergreens, the snow-capped Sierra Nevada, gigantic topaz-hued Lake Tahoe, and quaint towns on its periphery make the region a gem for cold-weather recreation, R&R, and nighttime action. For a quintessential ski day, head to North Lake Tahoe's Squaw Valley, the onetime Olympic Games site, where skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and snow tubing are white-hot. If nesting is more your speed, snuggle up inside one of the area's rustic cabins (with your hot beverage of choice in hand) and enjoy the snowfall. Or ski by day and heat up the night in South Lake Tahoe, where gambling, dancing, and carousing are as common as snowflakes.
